Architecture and Urban Safety and Wellbeing

By 2050, the world's urban population is expected to nearly double. Populations, economic activities, social and cultural interactions are increasingly concentrated in cities, and pose massive sustainability challenges in terms of housing, infrastructure, basic services, food security, health, education, jobs, safety and human wellbeing, among others.

In this unprecedented era of increasing urbanization, and in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, and other global development agreements and frameworks, the world have reached a critical point in understanding that cities can be the source of solutions to, rather than the cause of, the challenges that the world is facing today. If well-planned and managed, cities can be a powerful tool for sustainable development for both developing and developed countries.

The New Urban Agenda was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) in Quito, Ecuador, on 20 October 2016 asserts the integration of inclusive measures for architecture and urban safety and wellbeing. It proposes measures to develop architectural and urban safety and well-being such as the prevention of crime and violence, including terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism. The Agenda also addresses the crucial need for housing security and resilience, cities' health codes effectiveness, climate change and natural and man-made disaster management, food security and how to engage relevant local communities and non-governmental actors in developing strategies and initiatives serving Safety and human wellbeing objectives. However, there is still a need to develop ideas, initiatives, and debates around hardships encountering the effectiveness of those measures and how to put them in action.
