Towards Green Future

“The environment is everybody’s responsibility, and creating a green, healthy atmosphere for students is as important as teaching them. Effat aspires to teach its students to intellectually engage with the community and environment as much as in their studies.”

Dr Haifa Reda Jamal Al Lail, President of Effat University

As sustainability works its way ever higher on the global agenda, Effat University’s involvement with environmental initiatives has grown.

Through the commitment of our faculty, the passion of our students and the support of our community, we’re proud to have been involved in some of the most forward-looking developments in local and global sustainability over the past 20 years. In fact, we’re so committed to minimizing our environmental impact on future generations that sustainability has become a key part of our institutional/strategic goals, an entire area of research, and a key learning outcome for our students.

Saudi Green Building Council Club

Saudi Green Building Council Club Effat became the first university in the Kingdom to create a student club under the Saudi Green Building Council. To commemorate the partnership, the club honored Effat students with a cooperation agreement (2016).

Just some of the many ways in which we’re moving towards a sustainable campus:

  • Energy conservation program
  • Waste disposal and recycling program
  • Water conservation program
  • Our very own Smart Building Research Center

Did you know?

An entire house built from Effat’s recycled waste now stands in Al Baydha! All made possible thanks to a project aimed at making this rural village on the outskirts of Mecca socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. As part of Mission Deep Blue, specialist speakers gathered at Effat to give talks on saving the Red Sea through diving, and safeguarding the future of global marine life (2015).

Powering learning

In line with Vision 2030, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and they very fact that we have an abundance of solar resource here in the GCC, a prototype – ‘SolaRead’ – has been built on campus to test a proposed design for a green, sustainable, multipurpose solar-powered eLibrary. The system includes:

  • 4 x built-in electronic readers (Kindles)
  • Smart LED lighting
  • A self-charging station
  • A Wi-Fi center
  • An interactive info panel
We will be testing the design, tweaking its parameters and monitoring its viability to truly make the most out of green energy!

Sustainable Learning

Effat proudly sets an example in environmental stewardship with its Green Apple days, which give individuals, companies and organizations the opportunity to transform learning institutions into healthy, safe, costefficient and productive learning places.
